So, one day, you’re in your back yard when you hear a creepy and strange noise at the side of your house. Naturally, you’re a tiny bit weirded out or just don’t want to deal with whatever it is. So you look—and it’s a guy or gal and they have a clipboard. However, they don’t look like your normal meter reader guy or gal and so you take the time to watch them, then decide that they’re perfectly normal. Except…

Two hours later, you go inside only to hear a truck pulling off. Inside of it is all of your patio furniture, your dog, and a tree. Naturally, you get angry and call the power company. Except—oops, the person who came to do your meter reading wasn’t actually from the power company. There’s nothing that they can do—they don’t know the person. So what can you do? You absolutely must have your meter read, but at the same time…what can you do in order to minimize the chance of something like that ever happening again?

That is where the good old remote meter comes in. This isn’t a meter controlled by remotes, although a remote controlled meter would be pretty cool. Instead, they are meters that don’t require a person to read them. That means that the creeper in the above scenario has absolutely no reason at all to be anywhere near your home—and you don’t have to deal with a scenario like the above one ever again. Not to mention that you can also check your own meter readings more accurately. This means that there aren’t any human errors—and humans are pretty bad about errors!

Not to mention that it can make your bill cheaper. Say that you had an incident in which your meter reader accidentally doubled your bill. This can be crippling, especially if you’re only prepared for so much. So the question is—how exactly do you know when they’ve made a mistake? Well, you don’t! This is why you need to look into remote meters. That way, you don’t have to deal with mistakes. You get the first, most accurate reading.

Next, they don’t cost too much. And most companies will easily take the time to install your new meter. You just have to ask! Before you actually buy the remote meter, you need to take the time to look into what you’re getting—and also find out if you need any permits or the like before you install.

If you live in a historic district, you may find that you aren’t able to install remote meters. Find out if you can by checking with your local committee and taking the time to see if you can. If you are required to buy any permits, take your time to get them before you get the meter. You may not realize it—but permits can take quite a while to get ahold of! Keep these things in mind as you shop for remote meters!
